The new pack came yesterday, as expected. I packed up the old one to send back before going to my sister’s to celebrate her grandchildren’s birthdays. It was the first time since April that I was in a large family gathering, and a most enjoyable time. Then it was home to spend the evening with Debbie, and get everything ready for the bus ride back to Hanover.
Unfortunately, the shoe delivery got messed up. So I came back to the trail with my clown shoes. I currently have no plans to have them sent up to me before I finish up my northbound hike in three weeks. Thus, I’m half repaired.
This morning, Deb drive me in to South Station. The bus was completely full, and the driver had to leave a few customers for the next bus. But we left mostly on time, threaded through the Boston streets, then headed north.
In Hanover, I had a choice: walk on over to Norwich to stay with Pastor Jennie at St Barnabas, or hike the mile or so to the Velvet Rocks Shelter. It made most sense to me to get on the trail, even if only a little way in, to get back on track.
So I am in my hammock for the first time since Connecticut, and the sun is sinking down. The days are shortening. It all goes well, I’ll be in the Whites by the end of the week. That’ll be a different kind of adventure!
