After an incredible “going away” gathering at work, the work of finalizing everything this weekend felt insurmountable. A last day of work yesterday, last scramble to get everything to fit in the pack, the realization that I’m far too heavy, all seem to be raising a bar I’m struggling to leap over.

But, in the end, I catch my train (thanks, Jon, for the early morning ride), and, after 7+ hours, I’m sitting at Washington Union station waiting for the last leg of the journey to Harper’s Ferry.

It’s all about being in the moment now. If I let myself think too far ahead, the immensity of the task ahead is overwhelming. So I swing from nadir to zenith. What to do?

Obviously, it’s time for ice coffee!!

So, another hour by train, after a two hour layover, and I will have staged myself for the first steps on the trail.

Next stop, Teahorse Hostel, Harper’s Ferry…

  1. Hi Tom, it is Friday now, the end of the day. As I’m sitting on my desk just preparing for one more ‘normal weekend’ ahead, you are already fully immersed in your adventure. Wishing you the best of luck, will look forward to read your stories. Who know if one day I won’t feel inspired to do it myself? Than I can say “I read Tom’s blog and that’s how it all started…” hahaha. Best of luck! Paola
